First settled in 1888, Scottsdale was originally named Orange dale. US Army Chaplain, Winfield Scott came to the area in 1888, and purchased a 640 acre plot of lane for $2.50 per acre. He and his brother planted many crops, mainly fruit, and including a citrus grove…hence the name Orange-dale.
In 1894, the name of the town was changed to Scottsdale after Winfield Scott and his brother.
In 1951 Scottsdale was incorporated. At that time the area of the city was one square mile, and was touted as “the west’s most western town” by its mayor. In 1956 Scottsdale was featured in Life Magazine and was named “One of the most desirable communities in the West.” With that… the boom began and has not stopped since!
