Chandler is named after Dr. Alexander john Chandler; a veterinary surgeon who settled on a ranch south of Mesa. He acquired 18,000 acres of land and developed plans for a town called Chandler Ranch. The town of Chandler and Chandler High School were both established in 1912. By 1913, the first golf resort, The Hotel San Marcos was opened. Chandler was incorporated in 1920.
Chandler was slow to grow. In 1950, the population a mere 3800. By 1980 it had grown to 30,000. The 1990’s brought tremendous growth to Chandler. Today, there are over 240,000 residents.
