The city of Gilbert is names after William “Bobby” Gilbert who provided the land for the expansion of the Arizona Eastern railway to build a rail line between Florence, AZ and Phoenix. Gilbert was incorporated in July of 1920. At the time, Gilbert was a farming community. The population growth was due to the building of the rail line as well as the building of Hoover Dam.
